Why You Need a Holiday Calendar

Public holidays affect everything from payroll calculations to vacation planning. If you work in healthcare, manufacturing, emergency services, or any industry that runs 24/7, knowing when holidays fall is essential for scheduling. A holiday that lands on a Friday or Monday creates a long weekend. A holiday mid-week might mean adjusted shift patterns. Having all this information in one place saves you from searching “when is the next holiday” every few weeks.

For shift workers specifically, holidays often mean overtime pay, adjusted rotations, or skeleton crew schedules. Our shift schedule maker integrates with this holiday data so you can see exactly which holidays fall on your work days.

Holiday Calendars by Country

Every country has its own set of public holidays, and the dates can vary significantly from year to year. Religious holidays like Easter, Eid al-Fitr, and Diwali shift based on lunar or liturgical calendars. National observances like Thanksgiving in the US always fall on a specific weekday rather than a fixed date. Our tool handles all of these calculations so you get accurate dates for every year.

United States Holiday Calendar

The US has 11 federal public holidays per year. These include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Several of these follow the “Monday holiday” rule, meaning they always create a three-day weekend. In 2026, Independence Day falls on a Saturday, and Christmas falls on a Friday, giving workers natural long weekends.

United Kingdom Bank Holidays

The UK observes 8 bank holidays in England and Wales. Key dates include Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Early May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute day is given on the following Monday. Scotland and Northern Ireland have slightly different bank holiday schedules.

Canada Public Holidays

Canada has 9 national statutory holidays. Family Day in February, Victoria Day in May, and Canada Day on July 1st are among the most anticipated. Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the second Monday of October, much earlier than the American version. Provincial holidays vary, with some provinces observing additional days like Civic Holiday in August.

Germany Public Holidays

Germany observes 9 national public holidays (Feiertage). Neujahr (New Year), Karfreitag (Good Friday), Ostermontag (Easter Monday), Tag der Arbeit (Labour Day), Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day), Pfingstmontag (Whit Monday), Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day), and two Christmas days. Individual German states (Bundesländer) may observe additional holidays like Epiphany or Reformation Day.

Australia Public Holidays

Australia has 8 national public holidays. Australia Day on January 26, Anzac Day on April 25, and the Queen’s Birthday (observed on different dates by state) are uniquely Australian. Each state and territory also has its own additional holidays, such as Melbourne Cup Day in Victoria or Reconciliation Day in the ACT.

India Public Holidays

India has a rich calendar of public holidays reflecting its cultural diversity. National holidays include Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). Major festival holidays like Holi, Diwali, and Dussehra shift dates each year based on the Hindu lunar calendar. Our tool tracks these moveable dates for 2025 through 2027.

Japan Public Holidays

Japan has one of the most generous public holiday calendars with up to 19 national holidays per year. The famous Golden Week in late April and early May combines four holidays in quick succession. Other notable holidays include Seijin no Hi (Coming of Age Day), Shunbun no Hi (Vernal Equinox), and Tenno Tanjobi (Emperor’s Birthday). When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a substitute holiday (Furikae Kyujitsu).

France Public Holidays

France observes 11 public holidays (jours fériés) per year. Bastille Day on July 14 is the most iconic. Other holidays include Ascension, Whit Monday, Assumption (August 15), All Saints’ Day (November 1), and Armistice Day (November 11). French workers often practice “faire le pont” (making the bridge), taking an extra day off when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday to create a four-day weekend.

UAE and Saudi Arabia Holidays

The UAE and Saudi Arabia observe Islamic holidays that follow the Hijri (lunar) calendar, meaning dates shift by approximately 10-12 days each year. Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha are the major multi-day holidays. The UAE also celebrates Commemoration Day (December 1) and National Day (December 2-3). Saudi Arabia observes National Day on September 23.

South Korea Public Holidays

South Korea has 15 public holidays including the three-day Seollal (Lunar New Year) and three-day Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) celebrations. Hangulnal (Korean Alphabet Day) on October 9 and Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day) on October 3 are uniquely Korean observances. When holidays overlap with weekends, substitute holidays are provided.

Holiday Calendar for Shift Workers

If you work rotating shifts, holidays add another layer of complexity to your schedule. Many employers offer holiday pay (time-and-a-half or double time) for shifts that fall on public holidays. Knowing which holidays land on your work days helps you estimate your monthly earnings more accurately.

Our shift schedule maker has built-in holiday support for all 25 countries. When you generate your shift calendar, select your country in the settings panel, and holidays will be automatically marked on your calendar. You can even set holidays to count as days off, which adjusts your work/off statistics.

For a quick overview of which shift pattern works best for your situation, try our schedule finder tool. It recommends rotation patterns based on your industry, team size, and preferences.

Planning Vacations Around Public Holidays

One of the smartest ways to maximize your time off is to plan vacations around public holidays. A holiday on a Thursday means you only need to take one vacation day (Friday) to get a four-day weekend. A holiday on a Tuesday means taking Monday off gives you the same result. This strategy is especially valuable for shift workers who already have irregular days off.

Use our holiday calendar to identify these opportunities for the entire year. Look for holidays that fall on Mondays, Fridays, or mid-week days adjacent to your regular days off. In countries like France and Germany, this “bridge day” strategy is a well-known practice that can effectively double your vacation time.
